Identity Card:

Aadhaar is an identification card approved by both government and non-governmental organisations although it is not a document on citizenship. It not only has the card holder photograph but also includes biometric information such as fingerprints and image of the iris. Aadhaar card also contains a QR code that can be scanned to verify whether or not the details provided in the card are correct.

Proof of Address/Residence:

Aadhar card includes the Cardholder’s residential address. Therefore, it can be used as evidence of residency for different processes of governmental and non-governmental verification. Also, Aadhaar is considered a valid proof of residence when applying for various financial products such as share market investments, mutual funds, home loans, personal loans, credit cards, etc.

Government Subsidy:

The government has made it mandatory for citizens to connect their bank accounts to Aadhaar to take advantage of subsidies under various schemes. In order to obtain the subsidy directly on the bank account for schemes such as Pahal, Atal Pension Yojna, kerosene subsidy, school subsidy, food subsidies, etc.

Bank Accounts:

Along with PAN, Aadhaar has become a key document to open bank accounts these days. These days the banks just need Aadhaar card and PAN to open the applicant’s bank account. Jan Dhan accounts need the applicant’s Aadhaar, too. It is not, however, mandatory to connect your bank account to an Aadhar card.

Income Tax:

Income Tax Department made it mandatory for taxpayers to link Aadhaar to PAN. Aadhaar will now be required mandatory while paying income tax and filing returns otherwise the taxpayer’s ITR application would not be processed. The time limit for connecting Aadhaar to PAN has been extended until 30 June 2020.

Phone Connection:

Upon accepting Aadhaar as a proof of identity/address, almost all telecom companies have telephone connections. Once Aadhaar is given, the link will be allowed in the shortest time possible.

Gas Connection:

To get a new gas link, people have to have their Aadhaar. If they want to use a subsidy on their current gas link, they will need to fill out the KYC form and connect Aadhaar with their bank account to obtain subsidy directly in their Pahal (DBTL) account.

Mutual Fund:

You could earlier use the Aadhar Card to complete e-KYC for mutual fund investments, as mandated by SEBI. Although the previous e-KYC process is no longer operational, the process of opening an investment account is simplified if you have your Aadhar card.
