Aadhaarcard Link With a Mobile Number
What is Aadhar Card?
Aadhar, as described by Paul Romer, Chief Economist of World Bank, is ‘the most sophisticated ID program in the world.’ An Aadhar is a unique 12 digit identification number issued to the Citizens of India based on their demographic and biometric data. Issued by the UIDAI, a statutory authority established in 2009 by Government of India.
While not a citizenship card as such, this project is a dream project of the Government of India and decided to link this card to everything, including linking this to mobile numbers, bank account numbers, Public Provident fund and many other hosts of services used by the citizens.
These steps, however, were severely criticized by the citizens and many cased were filed with the Supreme Court. Be it causes related to obtaining the cards, or linking the card with mobile numbers and social schemes, all were raised in front of the court. The court finally ruled that Aadhar card was not mandatory, thus most need not be linked, including linking with Mobile number.
Should you link Aadhar with Mobile Number!
It was in the year 2017 that the government announced the linking of Aadhar with a mobile number, keeping in mind the following advantages:
- Updating of personal details linked to Aadhar using OTP.
- E-verification of ITR using OTP.
- Downloading of E Aadhar using OTP.
However, Aadhar not being a mandatory document and obtaining an Aadhar becoming difficult for many citizens, the Honorable Supreme Court, in September 2018 stuck down this government ruling. The choice now is on the people to decide whether they would like to add their Aadhar to their mobile number.
How can you link Aadhar card with mobile?
If you are trying to link a mobile number to Aadhar for the first time, you would need to go to the nearest Aadhar center, fill a form there and submit with a photocopy of your Aadhar card together with identity proof. Once validated with your biometric data, your number would be added within 5 working days.
If however, you would like to update your number, ensure you have your old number still with you. Go online, update the new number on the portal, add the OTP you would have received on your old number to validate the transaction and you are done.
For updating Aadhar number with a mobile operator, just visit your mobile operator, provide them with your Aadhar number, validate with your biometric details along with the OTP received on your mobile number, and the objective is achieved.
